Ways to Get Involved in a New Community

In our previous blog post, we stressed the importance of scouting out a good location for your new home, and in addition to the reasons we previously outlined, is another significant reason: you’re becoming part of a new community.  While much to the chagrin of many, when you marry someone, you accept their family as part of a packaged-deal.  Likewise, when you commit to a new home, you’re committing to a new community as well, and it’s important to make an effort to become involved and get to know your new neighbors.

It may be tempting to lend yourself solely to unpacking, settling in and decorating your new home, but once the move is complete, you’ll find yourself looking to better acquaint yourself with your new surroundings.  Consider the following tips when looking for ways to get involved:

  • Spend some time outside.  When the weather is agreeable, round up your kids and head outside for a leisurely walk.  Touring your new development when you have some downtime provides a great opportunity to run into neighbors whose schedules and lifestyles are similar to yours.  Avoid heading outside for a run or a bike ride for this specific purpose, as these activities make you less approachable, and don’t shy away from stopping to say hello to those neighbors you pass.
  • Participate in local events.  Begin looking through local newspapers and township websites to get a feel for the types of events your community hosts, and make it a point to attend one.  Many communities pay special attention to local causes and organizations, and getting to know your neighbors while contributing to local success and wellbeing helps you form meaningful bonds with like-minded people.
  • Welcome suggestions.  Sales managers can often be your best source of information on places to go, people to meet, and local activities to check out.  Since they have a significant presence in the community, they’ll be able to introduce you to neighbors and help you map out your new town.  Your neighbors can also provide helpful restaurant, shopping and entertainment advice, since they’re frequenting the same streets that you are.  People appreciate being asked for suggestions and take pride in sharing their local finds, and you’ll quickly come across people who share your tastes and interests.  Asking for suggestions can also lead to planned group outings, giving you the chance to both get to know your neighbors and the best spots in town.

Getting involved in your new community will help both you and your family to feel more comfortable in your new home.  While it certainly requires both time and effort, building meaningful relationships with your neighbors and local community is an investment that is sure to benefit you in the long run.
